Dear Voice for Animals,
I was deeply offended by the poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox included in your last issue. What was the value of the women’s movement if you people want have a poem referring to Man as King! Has the idea of equality between males and females not reached you people yet?

Dear Sarah,
We are sorry if you were offended by the inclusion of that poem (Voice of the Voiceless). It was added, in spite of the mention of man being a king, because we have always felt that this poem, regardless of its outmoded language, has had the ability to reach across the generations and inspire animal people to action.

Dear Voice for Animals,
I live in a very rural part of the state and have just learned about your organization. Before I join though, I would like to know what you are doing to get the large humane societies to stop killing the helpless animals incarcerated there. And what are you doing to decrease the number of wild animals who come so close to our doors, threatening the lives of our pets?

Dear Therese,
What we are doing for animals is spaying and neutering as many animals as we possibly can. The fewer the numbers the fewer animals who will end up being euthanized in shelters.

We are doing nothing to decrease wildlife living in wild areas. It is our contention that these animals were here first and that it is people who have encroached upon their territory. Perhaps you could build a fenced-in area with a return across the top for your companion animals?

Got Eggs?

If you are a vegetarian who eats eggs from only free-range hens it is imperative that you ask what happens to these hens after their production falls off ( become menopausal???).

It has been reported to Voice that some farmers simply let the hens go when they are of no further use to him/her. That would mean leaving these animals exposed to the elements, predation, starvation or any other kind of heinous end.
