Are You Aware of the New Maine Statues Regarding Cats?
This is a public document, though one has to wonder how many people know about it.
In particular, those who care for stray and/feral cats and those who have domesticated
cats who go outside should be aware of this.
3914. Seizure of Stray Cats. In the section on Homeless Cats note that if a cat
does not have I.D., he or she is considered homeless and only has to be kept at a shelter
for 24 hours before being euthanized.
Voice would urge you to read this law in its entirety (see our links page
under heading "Animal Welfare Laws", to read Maine statutes),
paying particular attention to the sections on seizure of stray cats and procedure for
acceptance and disposition of stray cats by animal shelters and ask yourself if this
law is really beneficial to the outside cats in the state.
New Postage Stamp
After six years of petitioning the US Postal Service, the International Society for Animal
Rights was finally successful in convincing them to create a postage stamp about spay/neuter.
The USPS has announced that in September 2002 it will issue two first-class commemorative
spay/neuter postage stamps, one depicting a puppy and the other a kitten.

Did You Know?
For every human born each year, 15 dogs and 45 cats are born.
Just think about cats (because there are so many more of them). In order
for each cat to get a home, every person in this country would have to
open his/her home to thirty felines. Spay and neuter your companion animals. It saves lives.
Cat Fancy Magazine
The efforts of Voice for Animals and some of its individual members were nominated to be
featured in the July issue of Cat Fancy magazine in its monthly feature Unsung Heroes.
