Welcome to Voice For Animals
Voice For Animals (VFA)
is grass roots non-profit organization established in 1987 and headquartered in York, Maine.
We have five chapters: York, Maine; Norway, Maine; Waterville-Winslow, Maine;
Richmond, Maine; and Milton, NH.
Each of our chapters has different programs, but we do agree that all animals matter and deserve compassion, comfort, happiness, and respect.
Our primary goal is to give them a VOICE. We work to eliminate animal suffering and overpopulation,
to educate the public, and to promote sensitivity and caring toward all animals.
Statistics provided by the Maine Federation of Humane Societies for the year 1997 (the most
recent year available) show that a total of 10,615 dogs and cats were euthanized in shelters
across the state. By alleviating some of the overcrowding at these shelters, Voice For Animals can
help twice: once by rescuing some animals before they go to a shelter, and again by allowing
the shelter animals to live longer (and have a better chance of being adopted) because there
are more empty cages available.
Our Purpose
This organization exists to promote sensitivity and caring for animals through
education and other lawful means and to share our knowledge of related issues with others
to promote understanding and compassion for animals and humans.

What We Do
We have, thanks to grants and generous private donations, established a spay/neuter program
that targets barn, feral, and other equally needy cats and dogs. We are working on getting a
mobile clinic operating soon.
- We trap, sterilize, vaccinate, and return feral cats to their colonies where they are
supplied with shelters and daily feedings. When possible, adults or kittens are placed
in a home environment.
- We pay veterinary bills, as our budget allows, for sick or injured animals who would
otherwise receive no treatment or be euthanized.
- We send out a quarterly newsletter to keep members informed or our accomplishments and
coming events.
- We will provide educational materials to schools, libraries, organizations and individuals
on the topics of companion animal care concerns, population and consequences, product testing,
vegetarianism, and more. One of our board members is a human educator who is able to offer
presentations to schools and other groups free of charge because of a humane education grant.
Some of the topics she offers include: animal rights, experimentation, factory farming,
consumerism, the link between animal abuse and domestic violence, and diversity.
- Another board member works with Project Impact, the Emergency Management Agency, and the
Red Cross to ensure proper evacuation and care of ALL animals in times of emergency.
- Lobbying for the certification and "shared municipal use" of animal control
officers and the adoption of standardized methodologies.
- Offering hope, advice and direction to people
who do not know where else to turn for animal help.

Funding
We operate on grants, public donations, and membership dues. Voice For Animals pays NO wages.
A few core volunteers cover much of the small administrative costs of caring for the animals,
thus ALL donations are used directly for the animals.
We are currently conducting a member drive to increase our membership numbers. We need members
not only to help financially with the costs of caring for the animals, but also to give the
organization strength and spread the word of the work we are doing and the great need. Please won't you
lend your voice to this worthy cause? Together we can make a world of difference for those who
depend on us; who give so much, and ask so little...
Lend your voice. Sign up at the membership information section of this site. Meetings are held at various times
and locations. Check the upcoming events section for more
information.
Until they speak to everyone as clearly as we hear them through our hearts, there is a great and
urgent need for you to join with us in becoming a Voice For Animals.
